Martin Luther King Jr [mis]Quote
Something that is going around since the death of Osama Bin Laden (mainly on facebook.com) is a supposed quote by MLK Jr that says:
"I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy."
Well, it turns out to not be his quote after all. It appears there was some confusion in translating people's posts and it got turned around a little bit.
The real story is a 24-year old Jessica Dovey is a middle school English teacher in Kobe, Japan posted a Facebook status update of "I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy." "Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that."
The "Returning hate..." part is an authentic MLK quote but somewhere down the line the quote marks got misplaced and so everyone just retweeted and reposted the whole status, making it appear it was a Martin Luther King Jr quote.
Sometimes things can get a little crazy on the internet. If you would like to learn more about the fabulous MLK Jr I would suggest one of these Martin Luther King Jr Biography books.
